Faculty Positions in Electrical Engineering

The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applicants for positions at the tenure-track or tenured level in Electrical Engineering, with an expected start date of July 1, 2013.

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in Electrical Engineering or related field by the expected start date.  In addition, we seek candidates who have an outstanding research record and a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and graduate training.  We are in particular looking for broadly educated and multidisciplinary applicants in all ranks, of exceptional potential, who can interact with a wide range of both Electrical Engineering and other SEAS faculty.

Position 1:  Emerging Topics in Information and Control.  We invite applications in all areas of Control Theory, Information Theory, Communications, Signal Processing, interactions between these fields (e.g. control with limited information) and applications.  We are particularly interested in non-classical research (e.g. quantum mechanical, new approaches to distributed, non-linear and stochastic control, information theoretic analysis of energy consumption, communications over non-linear media, non-linear signal processing ) or modern applications (e.g. biological, stochastic adaptation against cyber-attacks, dynamic control of materials properties) for these foundational areas.  Applicants will apply online at http://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/4286.

Position 2:  Emerging Electronic Devices and Systems.  We invite applications in broadly-defined areas of electronic devices, circuits, and systems from Electrical Engineering and other relevant disciplines.  We are particularly interested in:  1) emerging and/or ‘beyond-CMOS’ devices (including, but not limited to, nanoscale, molecular, low-dimensional, and quantum-effect devices); 2) all aspects of CMOS integrated circuits and systems design; and 3) emerging applications, including, but not limited to, bio/medical-technology (e.g., implantable systems, imaging, neuronal interfaces, biomolecular sensing and analysis), terahertz technology, and optoelectronics.  Applicants will apply online at http://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/4293.

Faculty Positions in Environmental Science and Engineering

The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applicants for positions at the tenure-track or tenured level in the field of Environmental Science and Engineering.

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University is embarking on a broad initiative within the area of Environmental Science and Engineering.  Our goal is to expand and strengthen undergraduate and graduate education and research on problems that affect the environment, on scales from local to global and spanning basic and applied sciences and engineering. Highlighted topics include but are not limited to: environmental and energy science, technology, air and water quality, hydrology, natural hazard mitigation, atmospheric science, oceanography, glaciology, and climate science.  A key aspect of our strategy in the development of teaching and research initiatives at Harvard has been the close relationship between SEAS and the other science departments at the University such as physics, chemistry and chemical biology, earth and planetary sciences, organismic and evolutionary biology, etc.

Preceptor in Electrical Engineering

The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applicants for the position of Preceptor in Electrical Engineering, with a preferred start date of July 1, 2013. The Preceptor will be primarily responsible for the coordination and support of a new course, EE 123: Creative Circuit Design, to be offered beginning in the Spring of 2014. The position is an annual (twelve-month) academic appointment, renewable for up to three years, depending on performance and continuing curricular needs. Involvement with other SEAS courses may evolve after a year or so, as EE 123 becomes well established.

EE 123 will be an intensive, hands-on introduction to the basics of analog and digital circuits, and the design and use of such circuits in larger-scale, open-ended projects. The course will contain both lecture and lab components. The goal of EE 123 is to give students the ability to design electronic circuits and combine them in systems to perform useful tasks for communications, computation, control, and sensing applications; it will serve as introduction to an advanced second semester circuit design course, EE124.

Responsibilities include:

  • Course design:  Work with (and report to) the faculty members who are the principal course instructors to define the learning goals for the course, design projects, and prepare course activities and materials.
  • Course & lab management:  Assist with teaching as necessary; hire, train and supervise teaching assistants, including leading TF meetings; and hold office hours for students. Assist in stocking lab and maintaining equipment in good working order.
  • Course administration:  Maintain course grade and attendance records, including contacting resident deans and the registrar’s office as needed; supervise website development and maintenance.


Bachelor's or advanced degree preferred, or the equivalent experience. In addition, applicants must be experienced in electronic circuit design.  We also seek candidates with superior organizational, written and interpersonal communication skills, along with the ability to lead and train teaching fellows and to manage interactions with undergraduate students.

Preceptor in Computer Science

The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applicants for the position of Preceptor in Computer Science.  The preceptor will be primarily responsible for the coordination and support of core undergraduate courses in Computer Science, including Computer Science 50: Introduction to Computer Science I, CS51:  Introduction to Computer Science II, and CS61:  Systems Programming and Machine Organization.  The position is an annual (twelve-month), academic appointment, renewable for up to three or more years, depending on continuing curricular need and performance.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Work with and report to the faculty members who are the principal course instructors on the preparation of lecture materials, in-class exercises, homework assignments, and examination questions
  • Lead weekly sections and teach undergraduate students
  • Hire, train, and supervise a team of teaching fellows, including leading regular TF meetings 
  • Design and implement tools and test cases to be used by each courses’ students and TFs
  • Hold office hours and advise undergraduate students across the Computer Science concentration

A background in computer science is required; master’s or Ph.D. in computer science or education preferred.  We seek candidates with superior organizational, written and interpersonal communication skills, along with the ability to lead and train teaching fellows and to manage relationships with hundreds of undergraduate students.  Prior experience teaching and designing problem sets and classroom exercises is strongly preferred and industry experience is a plus.

Lecturer in Innovation and Design

The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applicants for the position of Lecturer in Innovation and Design, with an expected start date of July 1, 2013. The position is an annual (twelve-month), academic appointment, renewable for up to three years, depending on continuing curricular need and performance.

We invite applications from individuals working at the frontiers of organizational and educational behavior in the areas of product, service and experience design, engineering design, human-centered design, need-finding, creative problem solving, diverse design processes, and innovation.

The position is especially suited for someone with an applied research background whose work focuses on the study of practical ways that innovative activity can be better supported in both organizational and educational contexts.  We are particularly interested in scholars with a highly integrated approach to teaching, research and professional preparation for our students beyond the classroom.  The role additionally entails ongoing entrepreneurial and design advising to students developing their ideas beyond the classroom.  An ideal candidate would also contribute to original research on the management and social aspects of engineering design and innovation, and be astute at integrating this applied research back into the classroom.  The position will frequently involve cross-disciplinary project work within the University, largely focused on improving teaching and learning in relevant areas, and candidates would be expected to show interest and aptitude for multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural and often multi-organizational collaborations.
