Mexico Postdoctoral Fellowship (SEAS)

Mexican scientists who already hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree may apply for a postdoctoral fellowship in bioengineering or environmental science and engineering in the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) if they are committed to return to Mexico upon completion of the fellowship. All applicants 1) must be employed full time in Mexico or, if not currently employed full time, must demonstrate a prior educational history that has taken place largely, but not necessarily entirely, in Mexico, and 2) must have completed the doctoral degree no more than three years prior to the application deadline below. All applicants will be expected to return to Mexico upon completion of the fellowship.

Appointments will be highly selective, with applications subject to extensive review. Ordinarily, SEAS will award only one postdoctoral fellowship under this program each year. Successful applicants will demonstrate superior academic and research credentials and a close fit between the research they plan to conduct during the fellowship and the work of the sponsoring faculty member or laboratory. Notice of appointment may be sent at any time during the year.

Each researcher may be appointed for a one-year or a two-year term, as determined by SEAS. Terms may be extended for an additional year. Extending a two-year term for a third year requires mutual agreement between the individual, SEAS, and CONACYT and the Fundación México en Harvard.

This program is possible thanks to the vision and generosity of the Government of Mexico, through its National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), and to the Fundación México en Harvard.

Application deadline is May 1, 2013.

Applicants from Mexico for a postdoctoral fellowship in bioengineering or environmental science and engineering at SEAS should, first, contact the SEAS faculty member with whom they wish to work on scientific research projects, and should include a CV and a research proposal that explains why the applicant wishes to work with this particular faculty member. If the SEAS faculty member is interested in working with the applicant as a postdoctoral fellow, the applicant should apply no later than May 1, 2013 by going to: http://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/4724

Selected fellows may start their appointments at any time mutually agreeable to the applicant and the SEAS faculty member hosting the applicant.

Questions may be sent in English to mexicopostdocs@harvard.edu.

Disease Biophysics Group Postdoctoral Fellow Positions

The Disease Biophysics Group at Harvard University invites applications for a number of Postdoctoral Fellow positions open for projects pertaining to building microscale models of diseased organs. The project requires the assembly of engineered, human microtissues in microfluidic devices that can be interrogated for the genetic, morphological and functional indicators of health, disease, and injury.

The Disease Biophysics Group is a multidisciplinary research group based in the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Wyss Institute for Biologically-Inspired Engineering, and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.

Candidates with experience in neuronal cell biology, striated and smooth muscle tissue engineering, the cardiac valves, and experimental models of diabetes are encouraged to apply. Applicants are expected to hold a doctoral degree in engineering, physiology, or cell biology and have a proven record of high quality publications.

For further information about The Disease Biophysics Group and its activities, see http://diseasebiophysics.seas.harvard.edu/.

Application Procedure

The application will be assembled as single pdf file: cover letter describing research interests and goals, CV, research statement, a full list of publications and up to three examples of first author papers, and a list of no less than three references with contact information. Please note that all requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed prior to the start date. The application should be sent to: dbg-postdoc@seas.harvard.edu

Full consideration will be given to all applications received by February 15, 2013; applications received thereafter will be considered until the positions are filled.

Harvard University is an equal opportunity employer. Women and underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Bioinspired Robotics and Medical Device Design

The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering and the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Harvard University invites applications for two postdoctoral fellow positions in the areas of bioinspired robotics and medical device design. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Materials Science, or a related field and a proven track record of high quality publications. The positions will involve close collaboration with Harvard-affiliated hospitals and the candidate should have a strong interest in contributing to multidisciplinary teams (engineers, computer scientists, physiologists, bioengineers and clinicians).

A range of research interests are possible within the themes of bioinspired robotics and medical device design; however, it is expected that mechanical design, robot control, biomechanical modeling of biological systems, mechanism design and kinematic analysis, device characterization and optimization, bioengineering as well as experimental/analytical mechanics will be key features of the research.  Candidates with strong leadership experience, a broad range of technical skills and a track record in translating conceptual ideas into working prototypes will be strongly considered. Experience working in industry (fabrication and prototyping, sourcing components, working with vendors, creating part drawings and documentation) is a plus.

The postdoctoral fellows will be encouraged to explore clinical applications for their work, publish scholarly papers and attend international conferences as well as take on a mentorship role for undergraduate and graduate students.

Applications, assembled as a single PDF file, should contain a complete resume, cover letter describing research interests and goals, full list of publications, copies of up to three relevant scientific papers, as well as the names and contact information of three references (expected to provide letters of recommendation

The mission of the Wyss Institute is to discover the engineering principles that Nature uses to build living things; to pursue the high-risk research that is fundamental to advance this effort; and to harness these insights to create biologically-inspired materials and devices to advance human health and improve the environment – thereby revolutionizing clinical medicine and creating a more sustainable world. Postdoctoral Position in Respiratory Cell Biology and Physiology for the Development of Biomimetic Microsystems Aimed at Modeling Pulmonary Disorders

The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in the Biomimetic Microsystems platform.

We seek outstanding postdoctoral applicants with expertise in respiratory cell biology and physiology and/or surface barrier (mucosal) inflammation to join an interdisciplinary team of biologists and engineers for the development of novel in vitro “organ-on-chip” microsystems technologies to study and model pulmonary disorders (Huh D et al. Science 2010).  Applicants are expected to hold a PhD or MD and have a proven record of high quality publications in respiratory biology and/or surface barrier inflammation. Strong interest in contributing to multidisciplinary teams (engineers, biologists/physiologists, clinicians) is critical for this position. Expertise in in-vitro culture of respiratory cell lines and primary human cells, as well as knowledge of basic molecular biology concepts and techniques is a must. The ideal candidate would bring expertise in respiratory cell biology, physiology, and pathophysiology, with an interest in applying this expertise in combination with modern bioengineering methods such as microfabrication and microfluidics.  This postdoctoral fellow is expected to develop and lead an interdisciplinary research project aimed at creating microengineered human “organ-on-chip” models and exploring their use for drug discovery applications.

Applications, assembled as single PDF files, should contain a complete resume, cover letter describing research interests and goals, full list of publications, copies of up to three relevant scientific papers, as well as the names and contact information of three references (expected to provide letters of recommendation). Applications should be sent to faculty_postdocs@wyss.harvard.edu.
