Prospective Graduate Students
Partners
Overview
We foster relationships with corporations, foundations, governmental organizations, and other partners to advance education, research, and innovation in areas of mutual interest; encourage technology transfer to advance research and spur innovation; and, by virtue of our integrated and multidisciplinary nature, facilitate connections throughout the University.
Our goal is to create a collaborative and vibrant environment by:
- enabling interactions with our faculty, researchers, and students;
- integrating our efforts with relevant offices, departments, and schools within Harvard;
- sharing information and ideas about scientific and technical challenges;
- maintaining and developing connections among Harvard alumni in the corporate world;
- providing avenues for hands-on problem solving aimed at making a positive impact on society.
Opportunities
Our partners have numerous avenues for engagement, including industry lectures, outreach workshops and seminars, visits to meet faculty and researchers, recruitment activities, and commercialization opportunities.
- We provide access and fruitful collaborations with world-renowned experts to give companies a window into emerging technologies and business opportunities.
- We help companies advance their research priorities in specific areas of interest and collaborate as significant long-term partners in major research initiatives.
- We facilitate technology transfer opportunities for companies, which may result in licensing opportunities and patents.
- We hold focused workshops throughout the year covering themes such as: multi-functional materials; advances in imaging, communications, and opto-electronics;; next generation computation and electronics; and technologies for sustainable engineering.
- We host a CTO Lecture Series and smaller format “tech talks” given by professionals and researchers from around the globe.

Examples of successful partnerships
BASF
Set up as an integrated partnership among Harvard and BASF
researchers, the BASF Advanced Research Initiative at Harvard benefits
from having strong ties with departments and schools throughout the
University.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
SEAS faculty, through support from the Gates Foundation, are
developing needle-free vaccines and finding new ways to gather public health
information.
National Science Foundation (NSF)
SEAS contains major government sponsored interdisciplinary
initiatives which support collaborations with industry, such as the
NSF-sponsored Materials Research Engineering Center (MRSEC) and the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC), as well as Harvard-initiated efforts like the seed-funded Center for Research on Computation and Society (CRCS).
Siebel Scholars
The Siebel Scholars program
was established in 2001 to recognize the most talented students at the
world’s leading graduate schools of business and computer science. Each
year, up to five outstanding graduate students are honored as Siebel
Scholars. The Dean nominates the Siebel Scholars on the basis of
outstanding academic performance and qualities of leadership. Each
Siebel Scholar receives a $25,000 award to defray tuition and expenses
in the final year of his or her graduate studies.
SiOnyx
A spin-off dedicated to commercializing black silicon, a novel
material developed at Harvard that has potential use in next-generation
night-vision and infra-red imaging systems and solar panels.
