Overview of SEAS

The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) is an innovative 21st century institution embedded in a classic liberal arts context.  Founded as the Lawrence Scientific School in 1847, the structure to support faculty and research in engineering and applied sciences at Harvard underwent several reorganizations during the 19th and 20th centuries.  In 2007, in recognition of the growing preeminence of engineering and applied sciences, the University transitioned the then Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences into a school – the first new school at Harvard in over 70 years.

The school has an annual operating budget of approximately $100 million, and an endowment of over $850 million, supporting approximately 600 undergraduate students in six undergraduate concentrations, 380 graduate students in four subject areas, 92 faculty and 410 research appointments, and 185 administrative and support staff.
