Research Focus

In remodeling tissues, the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) is a fundamental process and is an essential component of virtually all tissue-engineering strategies. The principal constraint of current efforts in regenerative tissue is to recreate the special micro-environmental gradients of regulatory factors that are critical to mimic nature’s program of vascular morphogenesis. In previous study, I have created gradient of matricellular cues and I have demonstrated the importance that spatial gradient distribution of ECM insoluble factors have in inducing directional sprouting angiogenesis processes. To improve the angiogenic capability of engineered tissues, my ultimate goal is to design biodegradable polymer vehicles able to provide a spatio-temporal controlled delivery of cells and/or regulatory factors in both in vitro and in vivo models. My past research projects included engineering cartilage and design of biomaterials utilized for protein delivery.
