Patterns play a key role in determining the macroscopic response in complex systems. In superconductors and ferromagnets, pattern formation leads to nontrivial phenomena, such as topological hysteresis, suprafroth, and topological time-reversal symmetry breaking. I will present time-resolved magneto-optical imaging and show that established theories (e.g., Landau theory of the intermediate state) ought to be revisited. Electronic patterns are well suited to serve as model systems to study the general physics of froths and foams.
