For Joanne Chang ’91, new cookbook is the frosting on the cake

Applied math alumna opens third bakery, invents a "magic" frosting, and releases a cookbook (Boston Globe)

Joanne Chang (A.B. ’91) graduated from Harvard with a degree in Applied Mathematics and Economics, expecting to settle into a career as a management consultant. As an employee at Monitor, she began baking cookies for her colleagues, but her evening hobby grew into something much greater.

Now an acclaimed pastry chef and the owner of Flour bakery and café—with branches in the South End, Fort Point Channel, and now Central Square—Chang is a perfect example of a SEAS alum: a flexible thinker with enough passion and ambition to follow an opportunity wherever it leads.

Her new cookbook, Flour: Spectacular Recipes from Boston’s Flour Bakery + Café (co-written with Christie Matheson), includes recipes for everything from breakfasts to breads, and you don’t have to be an applied mathematician to try them out.
