Four seniors were honored for their engineering problem-solving skills as recipients of the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Engineering Projects. Frank Doyle, Dean of the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and John A. & Elizabeth S. Armstrong Professor of Engineering & Applied Sciences, presented the awards during the fifth annual SEAS Design & Project Fair on May 4.

The four winners were selected by faculty members for having the best projects in Engineering Design Projects (ES 100), a yearlong capstone course for seniors in the S.B. engineering program. Each student in the course designs and completes a creative project that solves a specific, real-world problem. The award winners were:

  • Jennifer Chang, mechanical engineering, for her project “Sea Reach: A Scalable Deep Sea Robotic Arm” (advisor: Robert J. Wood, Charles River Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences)
  • Ishan Chatterjee, electrical engineering, for his project “TouchPoint: A Wrist-Worn, On-Body Touch Interaction Device” (advisor: Todd Zickler, William and Ami Kuan Danoff Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science)
  • Alexander Tarek Hassan, bioengineering, for his project “uCALF: ultrasound Catheter-based Automated Leg Fascicle Tracking” (advisor: Alperen Degirmenci, Ph.D. candidate in the SEAS Biorobotics Lab)
  • Andrew O’Rourke, bioengineering, for his project “The Magic Carpet: A Low Profile, Load-Bearing Soft Robot” (advisors: Rob Howe, Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Engineering; and Peter Hammer, staff scientist at Boston Children's Hospital and instructor in surgery at Harvard Medical School)

Each finalist received a certificate and $500.

In addition, the following students received honorable mention awards during the Design & Project Fair:

  • Mary Margaret Carmack, electrical engineering
  • Mir Saeed Ibrahim, mechanical engineering
  • Annabel Imbrie-Moore, bioengineering
  • Katja Lierhaus, environmental engineering
  • Michel Maalouly, environmental engineering
