Assistant Professor in Fluid Mechanics
The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applicants for positions at the level of tenure-track assistant professor in the field of fluid mechanics, with an expected start date of July 1, 2012. The ideal candidates will have high expertise in fluid mechanics and will also have a demonstrated commitment to significant and innovative applications in engineering and applied sciences.
Candidates are required to have a PhD or an equivalent terminal degree, or to be able to certify that they will receive the degree within one year of the expected start date. The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University is embarking on a broad initiative within the area of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. Our goal is to expand and strengthen undergraduate and graduate education and research on problems that affect the environment, on scales from local to global and spanning basic and applied sciences and engineering. Highlighted topics include but are not limited to: environmental and energy science, technology, air and water quality, hydrology, natural hazard mitigation, atmospheric science, oceanography, glaciology, and climate science. Preceptor in Applied Physics
The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applicants for the position of Preceptor in Applied Physics, with a preferred start date of February 1, 2012. The Preceptor will be primarily responsible for the coordination and support of a new course, AP50: Physics as a foundation for Science and Engineering, to be offered beginning in the Fall of 2012. The initial position is for an eighteen-month, academic appointment, renewable for up to five or more years, depending on continuing curricular need and performance. Involvement with other SEAS courses may evolve after a year or so, as AP50 becomes well established.
Responsibilities include:
• Course design: Work with (and report to) the faculty members who are the principal course instructors to define the learning goals for the course, design projects, prepare course activities and materials, and devise an assessment strategy.
• Course management: Assist with teaching as necessary; hire, train and supervise teaching assistants, including leading TF meetings; and hold office hours for students.
• Course administration: Maintain course grade and attendance records, including contacting resident deans and the registrar’s office as needed; supervise website development and maintenance and act as a liaison to the Academic Technology Group; and coordinate with visiting lecturers, including managing their itineraries during campus visits.
An advanced degree in physics, engineering, or a related field is required; Ph.D. preferred. Expertise in science education research, and experience in project-based learning and course design strongly desired. Superior organizational, written and interpersonal communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to lead and train teaching fellows and to manage relationships undergraduate students.

Lecturer/Preceptor Positions in Environmental Science and Engineering
The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applicants for the positions of Lecturer and/or Preceptor in Environmental Science and Engineering, with an expected start date of July 1, 2012. The appointments are made on an annual (twelve-month), academic basis, renewable for up to three years, depending on continuing curricular need and performance.
The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is embarking on a broad initiative within the area of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. A principal goal is to expand and strengthen undergraduate and graduate education in environmental disciplines. Highlighted areas include but are not limited to: environmental chemistry, hydrology, environmental and energy technologies, natural hazards, glaciology, and climate science.
Typical responsibilities for the Lecturer position include teaching two half-courses, as well as advising and research activities, as appropriate. Preceptors will be expected to assist principal course instructors with course design, management and administration, but will not teach courses. A willingness to participate in an expanding ESE undergraduate and graduate curricula and in the associated programs of research and design is a plus for both positions.
Candidates for the Lecturer position are required to have a Ph.D. or an equivalent terminal degree by the expected start date. A Ph.D. is preferred for candidates for the Preceptor position.

Preceptor in Design-based Instruction
The Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applications for the position of Preceptor in Design-based Instruction in mechanical engineering for the 2012-13 academic year, with an expected start date of July 1, 2012. This position has an initial appointment period of three years, and is then renewable annually for up to five additional years.
Candidates should have proven design experience in mechanical engineering, such as machine design, materials, robotics, embedded systems, etc., and be able to demonstrate practical, hands-on experience building prototypes for real-world/industry applications. This position requires a strong passion for and commitment to working closely with students. Candidates must possess the ability to advise students to: interact with customers to clearly identify design opportunities; develop creative solution concepts; use analysis and experiments to guide design decisions; make multi-dimensional design tradeoffs; and create detailed solid models and working prototypes. Candidates should be excited to work with students in one-on-one settings, be occasionally available on nights and weekends, and possess the ability to motivate students and convey excitement in the art of design.

- Academic advising: Serve as a primary undergraduate academic advisor for Applied Math concentrators. Responsibilities include meeting regularly with advisees and organizing activities to build and enhance the Applied Mathematics undergraduate community.
