Priorities, opportunities, and ways to give
"Engineers do many things. One of the most important things they do is to help build bridges. But, in many ways, Harvard engineering—Harvard’s new School of Engineering—is all about building bridges."
- Drew Faust, Lincoln Professor of History and President of Harvard University, Launch of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, September 20, 2007
Our progress has been made possible by institutional, governmental, industrial, and alumni support. Their financial generosity, intellectual guidance, and enthusiasm sustains our educational and research mission: within the classroom, across the campus, and around the world.
Within the Classroom
Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) works to create 21st century engineers.
By that we mean students who excel in engineering and applied sciences, but also have a broad knowledge of other disciplines and the imagination to relate advances in engineering to society’s most challenging problems.
At the same time, SEAS enables students from other concentrations to learn how engineering and technology underpin and shape many aspects of our global society.
Across the Campus
To remain a great university with a global reach, Harvard must have research programs commensurate with the changing needs of the present and the emerging challenges of the future.
Engineering and applied sciences are not only a University priority but also a critical element in renewed efforts to strengthen, restructure, and maintain the dynamism of Harvard’s entire learning and research enterprise.
SEAS serves as a connector and an integrator, spurring collaborative research with other departments and Harvard Schools, magnifying the reach and influence of each program through synergistic relationships.
Around the World
Advances in engineering and applied sciences are driving economic development, underpinning cultural changes, and leading to dramatic progress in knowledge and technology.
The resulting innovations are playing an increasingly central role in global transformations.
A defining element of SEAS is “translating” knowledge and discoveries into solutions that address our most pressing societal needs in areas as diverse as energy, the environment, human health, national security, and even governance.
