This picture is provided by LRSM's Confocal Microscope (taken by Eric Weeks)

Is this a screaming head of death? No, it's an odd-shaped pollen grain. We have a new confocal microscope, and this came from one of our test slides. Hopefully in the future we will provide a cool picture of the month more related to soft condensed matter.

Using the confocal microscope, we can take 3D images of samples, such as this pollen grain. It is then possible to rotate the data, which is how this picture was obtained. Check out the confocal home page (above) for more pictures.
