Thi movie shows a network of stacking faults (white beads) in a colloidal crystal and particles with no crystalline environment (yellow). The other particles of the crystal are omitted in the picture. Melting the crystal locally (cluster of yellow beads at the center) leads to a collapse of several stacking fault planes. The movie was rendered on the basis of experimental data taken at a colloidal hard sphere crystal using a confocal microscope. 30 seconds pass between each frame; the total movie covers 10 minutes.
