This is a SEM image of a Polystyrene non-spherical particle. The net beneath the particle is lacey carbon grid to hold the particle. The particle has dumbbell-like structure and only one lobe is coated with gold nanoparticles. This type of particles are called Janus particle, which is named after the Roman god, who has two faces back to back. These Janus particles are promising building blocks for superstructures made by self-assembly. Our group is working on developing a general protocol to specifically coat various nanoparticles onto one side of non-spherical Polystyrene particles.
