Tunable metalenses

We have demonstrated an adaptive metalens whose focus, shift, and astigmatism may all be electrically controlled. These metasurface lenses, which are based on dielectric elastomers (or “artificial muscles”), present a promising new direction for ultra-thin adaptive optics.

This work was published in Science Advances. See a press release from Harvard SEAS here.

Adaptive metalenses with simultaneous electrical control of focal length, astigmatism, and shift, Science Advances 4 (2), 2018

Complementing this work is our recent paper, published in APL Photonics, in which we demonstrate a mid-IR plasmonic metalens integrated with MEMS technology, enabling beamsteering. See a press release from AIP here.
