Key University and FAS Policies

  • Conduct of research (FAS “Grey Book”). This guide is indispensable for the conduct of research, patents and copyrights, and the use of the Harvard name—relevant even if you receive no external support. Among topics covered are principles governing research at Harvard; outside activities of academic appointment holders; guidelines for industry-related research; and the environment and safety plan. 
  • “Managing Your Research”. This text offers practical information on all facets of sponsored research, from the search for external funding to the closeout of a sponsored project.

Facilities/Office/Lab-related Issues

Scientific Instrument Shop

The Scientific Instrument Shop, based at SEAS and located in the Northwest Building, is a complete modern shop featuring:

  • all conventional lathes
  • mill machines
  • complete computer numerical control (CNC)
  • welding
  • silver soldering and grazing
  • high vacuum and low temperature work

The shop is also able to perform light design work and can achieve tolerances to .001. Each year the shop overseers about 700-1000 individual projects, ranging in complexity, scale, and time (from one hour to hundreds of hours). While based SEAS, the shop is open for use to all departments at Harvard. Past clients have included the FAS departments of biology, chemistry, and geology; the Harvard libraries and the museums; and the schools of law, medicine, and public health. The shop also occasionally offers services for outside universities and national research labs.
