Baras wins 2017 IEEE Simon Ramo Medal

John Baras S.M. '71, Ph.D. '73 (applied mathematics) has been selected to receive the 2017 Simon Ramo Medal from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Baras, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland, was honored “for exceptional contributions to the conception and commercialization of Internet-over-satellite systems, and for leadership in model-based engineering, systems science, and engineering research.”

The Ramo Medal, which was established by the IEEE board of directors in 1982, recognizes exceptional achievement in systems engineering and systems science.
