Humans of SEAS - Noemi Valdez

Noemi Valdez, A.B. '19, applied mathematics

Why applied math?

“I love studying applied math because of the way that I see it interact with other disciplines. For example, I'm currently applying math to psychology and have seen how these two different fields can come together to produce amazing and groundbreaking research.”

Favorite project?

“While at Harvard, one of the most interesting projects was getting to build an instrument in my computational music theory class. My partner and I ended up making a harp from scratch, and it was one of the best projects I've been part of.”

Life goals?

“My future goals are to become a university professor and teach mathematics. My life goal is to tackle a big issue: the lack of diversity in STEM. I hope that along with colleagues, we are able to create programs that expose students of low socio-economic status to resources and technology that they would otherwise not have the abilities to obtain. I hope that these students are able to see themselves as our future scientists, doctors, and mathematicians.”
