Seniors recognized for innovative projects

Dean’s Award recipients lauded for exceptional work in capstone course

Four seniors at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) were honored for developing innovative engineering projects aimed at tackling societal challenges—in service to the world, the nation, and our community. During the eighth annual Design and Project Fair on May 8, Dean Frank Doyle presented the students with the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Engineering Projects.

The four winners were selected by faculty members for having the best projects in Engineering Design Projects (ES 100), a yearlong capstone course for seniors in the S.B. engineering program. Each student in the course designs and completes a creative project that solves a specific, real-world problem.

The award winners were:

  • Aldís Elfarsdóttir, environmental science and engineering, for her project “Thermal Dynamic Model Development and Optimal Building Control using Sensor Network” (advisor: Na Li, Thomas D. Cabot Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics)
  • Sayo Eweje, bioengineering, for his project Cardiac Fibrosis-on-a-Chip: an In Vitro Model of Fibrotic Cardiac Tissues(advisor: Kit Parker, Tarr Family Professor of Bioengineering and Applied Physics)
  • Matthew Li, electrical engineering, for his project Ring Perceptual On-Person Peripheral (RingPOPP)(advisor: Krzysztof Gajos, Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science)
  • Lyra Wanzer, mechanical engineering, for her project Electroadhesive Treaded Microrobot(advisor: Rob Wood, Charles River Professor of Engineering and Applied Sciences)

Each finalist received a certificate and $500.

In addition, the following students received honorable mention awards:

  • Robert Anderson – mechanical engineering
  • Will Fried – mechanical engineering
  • Elizabeth Healey – electrical engineering
  • Jung Hur – bioengineering
  • Lilian Magermans – mechanical engineering
  • McKenna Roberts – bioengineering
  • Anubha Srivastava – electrical engineering
  • Shelby Yuan – bioengineering
  • Joseph Zuckerman – electrical engineering
